  • Super Hot Super Heroes

When the Avengers assembled at Comic-Con recently, it became pretty evident that in order to play a superhero (or villain), one had to have super-human good looks. That isn’t exactly surprising, right, because who wants the day to be saved by a troll? And it’s not exactly a new trend — Christian Bale as Batman, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and the list goes on. But considering the fervor for comic-book based films as of late and the interweaving of them as evidenced by the Avengers agenda, the power behind a square jaw and bedroom eyes becomes all the more clear, and seemingly necessary. Here’s a look at 12 recent castings that seem to prove the point.

  • The Debt Trailer

Popscorn fave, Sam Worthington, stars in a new thriller, The Debt, out this December. The film surrounds three Israeli Moussad agents from the ’60s, and smacks just a touch of 2005′s Munich. (CiarĂ¡n Hinds actually stars in both films, though he’s not so believable as the older version of Worthington’s character.) Judging from the first trailer, The Debt seems a pretty taught story with a great cast, but otherwise feels run-of-the-mill.

  • Clash of the Titans

”Just accept it.” That’s the advice given to Perseus when he discovers a sword from the gods in the forest. There’s no good explanation for it and no explanation is attempted. The same advice holds true for Clash of the Titans. It’s an action movie made for thrills. That’s it. Just accept it. It’s conceivable you might enjoy it.

  • The Details of Sam Worthington

This isn’t exactly big movie news, but it’s certainly related. Not that we need a valid reason to report on Sam Worthington, mind you. The Aussie actor dons the cover of Details this month, and the feature is a must read for any fan. Worthington seems on the cusp of being one of the most dominant action stars in Hollywood, after already headlining Terminator Salvation, Avatar and, next, Clash of the Titans. Christian Bale better watch his back.

  • Avatar

James Cameron‘s Avatar is decidedly one of the (if not the) most anticipated films of 2009. This weekend, the nearly $250-million alien tale of epic proportions hits theaters. And it’s about time. Avatar is more than 15-years in the making. Poor Cameron had to wait for technology to catch up to his vision for the ground-breaking yarn before it could be fully spun. The film’s visuals clearly benefited from this extended period of study and execution. The writing and the plot, on the other hand, didn’t. As Avatar’s appearance continued getting better with time, its story and structured waned. Considering the holiday time of year, it’s ironic that to enjoy Avatar is to revel in the wrapping. Remember that when opening your presents in the coming weeks.

  • Terminator Salvation

Who would have thought that salvation would come in the form of a man with the self-ascribed moniker McG? But it has. McG, who made angels fall from the sky (Charlie’s, at least), has resurrected a nearly terminated story and sparked life back into both man and machine.

It probably goes without saying that T2 was the best of the Terminator movies to date. Somewhere between the action sequences, the character development, and Linda Hamilton’s bulging biceps, nirvana was found. However, McG has created a fine addition to the series in Terminator Salvation, though he does explosive heat better than burning heart.
